Pancake Day

Hooray – Pancake day is almost here and we are ‘flipping ‘ excited!

We’ve put together some facts about the day so you can find out a bit more about it:

~ Pancake Day takes place on Shrove Tuesday which, this year, falls on the 28th of February. The date changes from year to year because Shrove Tuesday always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday.

~ Shrove Tuesday takes its name from the tradition of Christians trying to be 'shriven' (meaning to free yourself from sin) before Lent begins. Pancakes became a part of this much later on as a way of using up rich and indulgent foods, like eggs, milk and sugar before the 40 days of fasting.

~ Pancake Day is the equivalent of America’s ‘Mardi Gras’ which means fatty Tuesday in French.

~ The first recorded pancake race was in Olney, Buckinghamshire in England in 1445.

~ The largest number of pancakes tossed in the shortest amount of time is 349 tosses in two minutes, which was achieved by Dean Gould at Felixstowe, Suffolk in 1995.

~ The world’s largest pancake was made in Manchester in 1994. It was 49ft 3in in diameter.

~ The world record for pancake eating is fifty 3.25oz pancakes in ten minutes.
