World Gin Day 2017

It’s here again! For the ninth consecutive year, the second Saturday of June (this year, the 10th) is World Gin Day! Founded and still headed up to this day by gin enthusiast Emma, WGD is simply an excuse to get some people together and drink gin, which is certainly a cause we can get behind. Gin is wonderful because the vast range of flavourings means there’s a combination out there for everyone, and when you consider all of the classic cocktails that are created with gin, there really is no reason for anyone over 18 to feel left out.  With that in mind, I went looking for the best gin recipes to help us all celebrate, but found some fairly interesting facts along the way…so I’ll share those first:

  1. Gin was originally developed in London, after the idea was brought to us by British soldiers who observed the Dutch drinking genever, a very similar spirit, before going into battle – hence the phrase ‘Dutch courage’.
  2. Tonic water was originally used as a medicine for malaria in India, but gin, lime and sugar were later added to make it more palatable – and the modern G&T was born!
  3. Though James Bond’s famous “shaken, not stirred” is probably the most remembered Martini quote in the world, the majority of bartenders would recommend a stirred Martini, as shaking prompts too much dilution!

But now, without further ado, here are some lovely gin cocktail recipes to accompany your WGD celebrations…chin chin!
