Celebrating The Great British Mussel

As a long-term enthusiast of Jamie & Jimmy’s Friday Night Feast, I was very excited recently to see mussels featured on Food Waste Mission. These little shellfish are so often overlooked because so many people don’t know what to do with them – or even much about them, in fact. For example, did you know that mussels have been cultivated in Europe for 800 years? Or that they can only be eaten during months that have the letter ‘r’ in their name, as this is when mussels are in season? Or even that we export 2/3 of all the mussels produced here in the UK – the exact problem that Jamie and Jimmy were looking to solve?

Mussels are truly a little treasure. They’re bursting with good stuff like protein, iron and Vitamin A (which nourishes your eyes, skin and immune system), as well as being super-cheap to buy and so easy to cook that you’ll wish you’d tried it sooner. Well, some recipes are – Jamie himself has a wide range of brilliant mussels recipes available, ranging from ‘super easy’ to ‘showing off’ depending on how adventurous you’re feeling!

Whichever you go for, you’re sure to impress with a mussels dish, which is why we’ve selected a ‘super easy’ one to get you started. It’s also got great health stats and cooks in 10 minutes – what’s not to love? Check out the recipe here. Don't forget to pick up a set of our stunning Mussel Eaters to help you make short work of your culinary creation!

Do you love mussels as much as Jamie, Jimmy and I do? What are your favourite ways to cook them? We’d love to hear from you!
